BFC Field Day 2026 was conducted over two days, bringing together members and industry stakeholders to review ongoing research and observe how these translate into operational decisions within industrial tree plantation management. This programme forms part of BFC’s ongoing effort to facilitate collaboration, strengthen technical understanding, and support continuous improvement across its members.

The first day of the programme focused on the presentation of research findings from ongoing trials. These included work on clonal evaluation, fertiliser regimes, pest management, and tree improvement and hybridisation. The sessions provided a platform for members to share progress, compare approaches, and discuss results within the context of their respective plantation environments.

The second day moved into the field at Gerak Saga plantation. The visit began with a welcome address and a safety briefing, before proceeding to the clonal evaluation trials. Here, participants were provided with an overview of plantation operations and engaged in discussions on the strategic importance of clone selection for Eucalyptus Pellita. Particular focus was placed on the methodology used to identify suitable planting material, taking into account both growth performance and site-specific conditions.

The group subsequently visited the operational nursery and R&D clonal facilities, where propagation processes and planting preparation were observed. These site visits provided participants with the opportunity to connect research findings with field realities, allowing for a more grounded understanding of how trial outcomes translate into practice.

The programme concluded with a wrap-up by BFC Director, Mr. Paul Warburton, followed by a closing address by FSM Managing Director, Mr. Glen Mac Nair.

Key insights from the field day reinforced the importance of collaboration in advancing industrial tree plantations, as well as the significant productivity gains observed in selected clones compared to existing seedling stock. At the same time, the discussions highlighted that growth alone is not sufficient, as stem form remains a critical factor in determining suitability for downstream applications such as plywood and veneer. When both volume and stem form are considered together, the ranking of clones can shift significantly, underscoring the need for a more comprehensive selection approach.

BFC Field Day continues to serve as a practical platform where members can share knowledge, validate research under field conditions, and collectively strengthen decision-making across different plantation environments. Through this, BFC supports the development of a more informed, collaborative, and resilient forestry industry.

Participating organisations included Malaysia Investment Development Authority (MIDA), Maxland, Samling, Acacia Forest Industries Sdn Bhd, Sapulut Forest Development Sdn Bhd and MIE Sustainable Energy Sdn Bhd.

Thanks BFC Research & Development Sdn. Bhd. for another well-run Field Day. Good to see industry players coming together, grounded in field realities.
