Kuching, Monday, December 15, 2014 – SARAWAK FORESTRY Corporation (SFC) will embark on a 3 year program to accelerate and improve the supply of High Quality Planting Material to the tree plantation industry.
In order for License for Planted Forest (‘LPF’) holders to reach the 1,000,000 hectare planting target prescribed by the Government, they require significant quantities of improved planting material. The species chosen must not only be capable of high growth performance and resistance to disease but they must also be also of interest to the wood processing industry.
The SFC has a proud history of advanced tree and wood products research and will, over the next 3 years, engage more closely with industry to ensure that planters have the core improved material and also the skills necessary to propagate the plantlets needed for extensive establishment programs.
To ensure that the quality of Sarawak’s planting material supply continues to improve, SFC has today signed a signed a 3 year contract with Forest Solutions Services Sdn Bhd (FSS), an experienced forest management and research company. FSS will provide a Project Manager and several short term consultants to join with SFC’s existing team in bringing the latest tree breeding methodologies and material to Sarawak.
As part the industry engagement program, SFC aims to establish tree breeding trials and Seed Production Areas (SPA’s) on the LPF Licenses so that the performance of individual tree families can be analysed across a range of conditions. This will ensure that only the most robust, highest performing and locally suitable families will be put into production.
